The Holroyd near Oswestry sets out a winter of theatre, opera and community classes

In the parkland of Moreton Hall School at Weston Rhyn, just outside Oswestry, The Holroyd Community Theatre describes itself simply as a theatre for everybody. It serves North Shropshire and the Welsh Borders with professional and amateur theatre, dance, music, comedy, film and talks.
Its autumn and winter programme opened in September with Our Star Theatre's The Three Musketeers. Author evenings presented with Oswestry independent bookshop BOOKA included An Evening with Donna Ashworth and An Evening with Keith Brymer Jones, and An Evening with Mary Portas is listed for 16 November.
December is the busiest month. Moreton Hall's senior pupils stage Little Shop of Horrors from 1 December, Puccini's Madama Butterfly comes to the stage on 6 December, and Springwatch presenter Iolo Williams visits on 7 December for a charity evening in aid of Feed the Birds. Families can catch a screening of Arthur Christmas on 22 December, and a Festive Wreath Making session takes place on 26 November.
The new year brings The Hit Parade: The Ultimate 60's Show in February, with Fleetwood Shack, Verdi's Aïda and Our Star Theatre's Hannay Stands Fast among the spring dates already announced.
Creative director Michael Jenkins said: "The Holroyd is about much more than what happens on stage. We want to provide a welcoming space where people can come together, experience great performances, discover new interests and take part themselves."
That shows in the weekly programme. Face2Face Performance Academy teaches dancing, singing and acting to young people aged 9 to 18 on Wednesday evenings and is open to anyone in the community. Dance for Parkinson's supports people living with Parkinson's and their carers, Buggy Walks bring parents and little ones together, and North Shropshire Music runs instrumental ensembles for all ages and abilities. The weekly offer has also included Monday Warm-Up, for young people and adults aged 16 and over with special educational needs and disabilities.
Moreton Hall principal Michael Brewer said having a venue like The Holroyd on the school's site creates opportunities for people of all ages to engage with the arts.
