Whitchurch has a bookshop with a difference. Ritual Reads, which opened its doors on Friday 28 November 2025, is dedicated to horror, fantasy, science fiction, mystery and esoteric books, and it has quickly built a following among readers who like their stories a little strange.

The shop is the work of owner Amanda Logan, who spent her career in IT systems development before deciding to build something tangible and focused on human connection. A lifelong fan of eerie fiction and folklore, she has spent years collecting unusual books and designing atmospheric spaces, and both shaped the shop.

"Opening Ritual Reads is the culmination of a lifelong love of eerie stories, folklore and the kinds of books that stay with you long after you've turned the final page," Amanda said when it opened. "This community felt like the perfect place to open the shop."

Inside, Victorian architecture meets modern occult charm. The shelves are gathered around dark fantasy, cosmic horror, speculative fiction, gripping mysteries and esoteric works, and there is a range of literary gifts and genre-themed keepsakes to go with them. A coffee counter and plenty of seating encourage visitors to stay a while.

The shop was welcomed into membership of the Booksellers Association. Amy Bradley, its interim membership manager, called Ritual Reads "a brilliant example of how independent bookshops can offer something truly distinctive while remaining deeply rooted in their local community".

Ritual Reads is about more than buying books. Amanda planned twilight readings, folklore-inspired gatherings, tarot evenings and author visits, and the shop now runs themed book clubs, workshops and literary celebrations. The book clubs have proved so popular that some are full, with a waiting list for places.

Early reviews suggest the idea has struck a chord. One visitor wrote that they had travelled to Whitchurch specifically for the bookshop and was not disappointed, while others praise Amanda's friendly, knowledgeable recommendations.

Readers who cannot get to Whitchurch can still support the shop through its online store on Bookshop.org, where orders are linked to Ritual Reads.
